Kiridashi knives are designed for marking points to cut wood in professional carpentry, but also make for excellent bushcrafting or EDC knives, due to the tough design and pocketability!

Mr. Funatsu trained with the famous blacksmith, Kengo Usui, and is most renowned for making spectacular Kanna plane blades!

We're enamoured by these chisels we just got from Mr. Takahashi, based out of Miki, Japan! These are timber framing chisels, known in Japan as "anaya nomi". They're designed for paring joints or large mortises in very large blocks of wood, crafted to meet the needs of professional carpenters here in Japan, and quite a rare sight outside of the country! These chisels are nice and sharp, allowing them to double up as a slick in some cases.

The first generation blacksmith became an apprentice to his grandfather, who in turn was taught by legendary swordsmith Kurokawa Utaro, and learned to make planes by applying the same techniques employed when making Japanese swords. With over 60 years of tradition and experience, they aim to make planes that are trusted and loved by professional cabinet makers, luthiers, etc.

They come in size ranges of 42, 48, 55, 60 and 65mm!

We just got more Higonokami knives from Nagao Kanekoma through our doors! These new knives are called “Stainless Bolt” Higonokami knives. They feature a distinctive screw, holding the blade into place. Most Higonokami knives feature a rivet mechanism, which will loosen over time, and needs to be tapped with a hammer to tighten it. The benefit of this screw is that the user only needs to tighten the screw with their hand, this combined with the sharp and durable VG-10 steel blade makes it a fantastic tool to bring on a camping trip or even to have around the house!

We just got in a delivery of beautiful Tetsuhiro Damascus professional chef's knives from Kiryu Kogyo!😍 Their classy black handles and gorgeous Damascus design makes these a standout knife bound to look amazing in any kitchen! The VG-10 high-carbon stainless steel ensures these knives will retain their edge for a long time, and can be easily resharpened!

Kiryu Kogyo began in 1927, in the town of Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. They started making small knives, kitchen knives and hatchets. They would go on to produce swords for the Japanese military during World War 2.

After the war, Stainless steel was introduced to Japan from the West. Stainless steel required far less maintenance than traditional Japanese steel knives, but kitchen knife artisans rejected it as it could not maintain the sharpness that Japanese knives were known for.

Kiryu Tetsuo, then head of the company, was an inquisitive man. He developed through sheer trial and error, a technology to sandwich another type of steel in between stainless steel. Through this, he was able to develop a knife that combined the sharpness of a Japanese knife with the low maintenance of a stainless steel knife. The knife garnered massive support and was put into full-scale production.

Mr. Tomita was the third generation in his family of blacksmiths. He forged knives entirely by himself in Miki, Japan for over 55 years before his unfortunate passing at the end of 2021.

These axe blades are made from 3 layers of laminated steel. The broadaxe's grip measures 330mm in length, making it easy for some smaller precision work. The craft axe's grip is 245mm, making it very portable and ideal for use on camping trips to chop logs for campfires, etc.

The smooth smoked oak grip is easy on your hands, and lends the axe a refined look. Mizuno has also included a strap to make it easy to tie onto your pack or belt for quick access! Both of these axes also come with genuine leather sheaths to keep the blade protected.

About the company:
Mizuno Industries was founded in 1937 in Sanjo, Niigata prefecture, originally making replacement blades for wooden planes. The rise of electric power tools prompted Mizuno to shift their focus to manufacturing axes.

Grooves are carved into the axe's blade to symbolise the prescence of the Shinto gods in nature, and invoke their protection when conducting potentially dangerous work with the axe.

Mizuno Isao was awarded the title of "Meister" by Niigata prefecture in 2006, and was certified as a Japanese traditional craftsman in 2012.

We just got this beautiful Majiro Santoku kitchen knife through our doors!😍🔪 This Majiro (meaning "the moment") knife features rust-resistant Gingami No. 3 steel. The handle has layers of maple, cherry and walnut, and lends the knife a distinctive colour. It is suited to any home cooking tasks, including cooking meat, fish, or chopping vegetables.🍖🐟🥕 The handle has good balance which will reduce fatigue!

Majiro is made by Tanaka Shigeki, who is the fourth generation in his line of blacksmiths who starting making sickles at the end of the Meiji period.

Mr. Tanaka trained in Takefu (now Echizen city) in Fukui Prefecture before returning to Miki to join his family's factory in 1999. He is a legend both domestically and internationally for producing beautiful kitchen knives.

Planing event in Taiwan

We co-organised the 5th Taiwan Planing event in Yongchuan on June 8th and 9th 2024, introducing Japanese artisan hand tools to Taiwan based woodworkers. The event turned out to be a massive success!
