Nakahashi Manufacturing were established in 1955, amid Japan's reconstruction efforts after the war. At that time, mortising wood was the most time consuming part of building a home, needing to be done one by one by the hands of a professional carpenter.

Nakahashi Hisamasa studied the English Clico pattern chisel and developed his own effort called the "Kobayashi Pattern Hollow Square Mortise Chisel & Bit" to suit the carpentry work being conducted in Japan, lowering the requirements needed to mortise and aiding in Japan's reconstruction effort.

Now, Kobayashi pattern chisels and bits are used to repair shrines and temples across the country, preserving Japanese tradition and culture. They are also seeing success worldwide, popular with furniture and cabinet makers, owing to their durability and precision.
