JAPANESE PLANES
Japanese planes are commonly called "pull planes" because they cut on the pull stroke. They don't require as much strength to use and can correct wood that has warped. Their pulling style and low cost makes them a good recommendation for hobbyists.
Artisan hand forged planes are the primary tool of Japanese Shinto shrine carpenters for planing wood without leaving scratch marks and damaging the wood fibers. This is said to impede the wood’s “breathing”.
Tsunesaburo is one of the most famous Japanese plane artisans in the West. The Miki series is one of their most unique products.
Miki planes feature powder metallurgy HSS (High Speed steel) which holds its edge better than Aogami paper steel. This makes the Miki plane particularly suited to planing hardwood and wood composites. They are ready to be used out of the box, and do not require Uradashi plane setting.
The Miki series come in sizes of 42, 48, 55, 60 and 65mm.
